Stand Apart, Stand Alone: Expert Panel to Share the Secrets of Business Innovation

Washington, D.C. / With so many businesses and entrepreneurs focusing on survival and cost-cutting, innovation has taken a backseat to the bottom line. According to a star-studded panel of corporate leaders, however, that way of thinking is counterproductive to the overall health and well-being of a business. Today’s focus should be on fostering, managing and profiting from innovation, something these same business growth and development experts will share with some of the nation’s most successful private company leaders at the 2009 Inc. 500|5000 Conference, September 23-25, in National Harbor, Md., just minutes from Washington, D.C.

David Freedman, a contributing editor at Inc. magazine and acclaimed author moderates an interactive panel discussion which will outline how to promote innovation by tapping into the creativity of employees, customers and even competitors. Freedman says the opportunity to innovate toward new and expanded markets is always there; in both up and down economies.

“Entrepreneurialism hardly languishes during a down economy,” says Freedman, who is also the author of national bestseller A Perfect Mess: The Hidden Benefits of Disorder - How crammed closets, cluttered offices, and on-the-fly planning make the world a better place. “On the contrary, more challenging times tend to inspire greater innovation, tougher competition and bolder action.”

Freedman will share these and other growth secrets at the 2009 Inc. 500|5000 Conference which commemorates the 28th anniversary of the event. In its first issue in 1979, Inc. published a ranking of the 100 fastest-growing small public American companies before expanding the concept to private companies in 1982. The following year, Inc. expanded the list to include 500 companies.

Previous honorees include notable institutions like Microsoft, Oracle, Intuit, GoDaddy, Under Armour, Jamba Juice, Timberland, Clif Bar, Patagonia, American Apparel, and hundreds of other powerhouses. In 2007, Inc.com published the first-ever Inc. 5000 list of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies while Inc. published the top 10% of the list in print with the annual Inc. 500 issue.

Joining Freedman on the panel discussion will be Nolan Bushnell, CEO of uWink and founder of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese’s; Tan Le, co-founder of Emotiv, and Rodney Brooks, co-founder of iRobot and founder, chairman and CTO of Heartland Robotics. Each speaker brings unique innovative insights to the panel, and Freedman says he’s looking forward to being a part of such an accomplished group of speakers at this year’s Inc. 500 Conference.

“It’s an honor to rub shoulders with this extraordinary group of people – the most successful entrepreneurs in the world’s most competitive economy,” says Freedman. “There are no recipes for successful innovation, but companies can be inspired to take the smart risks and bold, creative strokes that live within innovation. That inspiration often comes from hearing about the approaches, wrong turns and ultimate successes of high-achieving innovators. That’s what this session is all about.”

Through decades of combined business growth and development experience, Freedman, Bushnell, Le and Brooks have developed proven strategies of product and conceptual innovation they will bring to the Inc. 500|5000 Conference & Awards Ceremony, September 23-25, in National Harbor, Md.
